Jon Postel

Jon Postel played a central role in the development and governance of the Domain Name System through his work on Request for Comments (RFC) documents and his oversight of internet resource allocation. As the editor of the RFC series, he helped define many of the technical standards that underpin how domain names are resolved to IP addresses.

Jon Postel led the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the organization responsible for coordinating the internet's global identifier assignments including top-level domains, IP address allocations, and protocol port numbers. IANA's functions were later absorbed into ICANN after Postel's death in 1998.

Postel's Law, also known as the robustness principle, states: 'Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others.' This principle, originally articulated in RFC 760, became a foundational design philosophy for internet protocols, encouraging interoperability and resilience across diverse implementations.

In 1998, Postel played a key role in the transition of internet governance from the U.S. government-funded IANA to the newly formed ICANN, a multistakeholder nonprofit. He submitted a proposal to the Commerce Department advocating for the creation of a new entity to manage domain names and IP numbers, which formed the basis of the ICANN transition that occurred shortly before his death.
