Ficciones, first published in 1944, is widely regarded as Borges' masterpiece and contains his most celebrated short stories, including 'The Library of Babel' and 'The Garden of Forking Paths.' The collection blends philosophy, mathematics, and literary game-playing in ways that influenced postmodern fiction worldwide.

Remarkably, Borges never wrote a novel; his reputation rests entirely on short stories, essays, and poetry. He argued that the short story was a more demanding art form because it required total concentration and economy of language.

'The Library of Babel' imagines a universe consisting of an infinite library containing every possible combination of letters, rendering virtually all books meaningless gibberish. The story explores themes of infinity, knowledge, and existential despair, and has inspired real-world digital projects that generate its combinatorial text.

Despite being nominated numerous times and widely considered one of the most important writers of the 20th century, Borges never received the Nobel Prize. Many observers believe his conservative political stances and his acceptance of honors from right-wing governments, including Pinochet's Chile, cost him the award.
