Joseon was a Korean dynasty founded by Yi Seong-gye in 1392 and lasting until the proclamation of the Korean Empire in 1897. Its government organized political life, education, family relations, and official ritual around Neo-Confucian principles, while maintaining a centralized bureaucracy selected in part through civil service examinations. During the reign of King Sejong, scholars created Hangul in 1443 and promulgated it in 1446 as a writing system designed to represent Korean speech more directly.

When was the Joseon dynasty founded?

Joseon was founded in 1392 when the general Yi Seong-gye, later King Taejo, took the throne. The dynasty moved its capital to Hanyang (modern Seoul) in 1394 and lasted until the Korean Empire was proclaimed in 1897.

Did the Joseon dynasty create hangul?

Yes, the Korean alphabet was created under King Sejong the Great and promulgated in 1446 as Hunminjeongeum. Hangul was designed so common people could learn to read, complementing the classical Chinese long used by the scholar-official elite.

What happened during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the Joseon era?

Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Korea in 1592, beginning the Imjin War, which lasted until 1598. The Korean admiral Yi Sun-sin achieved famous victories with his 'turtle ships,' including the Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597 against a far larger Japanese fleet.

How did the Joseon dynasty end?

In 1897 King Gojong proclaimed the Korean Empire, formally ending the five-century Joseon dynastic framework under pressure from outside powers. Korea was then annexed by Japan in 1910, ending Korean statehood until 1945.
