J. P. Morgan, born John Pierpont Morgan in 1837, was an American financier who played a central role in the consolidation of major industries and railroads during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He helped organize General Electric and the 1901 formation of United States Steel, the first corporation valued at more than one billion dollars.
Morgan also used private banking resources to support the financial system during major crises, including the Panic of 1907. His banking partnership became an important predecessor of modern JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley.
