Julia Heliconian

The Julia Heliconian is primarily found in the southern United States, particularly in Florida and Texas. They thrive in tropical and subtropical environments, often frequenting open clearings and edges of forests. You will usually see them actively gliding through the warm, sunlit areas.

Adult Julia Heliconians feed on the nectar of various flowers, but they are especially drawn to Lantana and Eupatorium. The females lay their eggs on passion vines, specifically those in the Passiflora genus. This makes planting passion vines an excellent way to attract them to a butterfly garden.

While both sexes are bright orange, the male Julia Heliconian is generally brighter and has more elongated forewings than the female. Females often have a darker, more subdued orange coloration with a black smear or band across the upper side of their wings. Observing their size and wing shape in flight can also help differentiate them.

The Julia Heliconian belongs to the Nymphalidae family, which are commonly known as brush-footed butterflies. This family is one of the largest families of butterflies, comprising over 6,000 species. The Julia Heliconian is the only member of its specific genus, Dryas.
