Junggar Basin Semi-Desert

This unique semi-desert ecosystem occupies an enclosed, inland basin in the Xinjiang region of northwestern China. It is geographically sandwiched between two massive mountain ranges: the Altai Mountains to the northeast and the Tian Shan to the southwest. Its remote, landlocked nature heavily dictates its climate.

The arid landscape is predominantly covered by fixed and semi-fixed sand dunes, which support highly specialized desert flora. Despite the harsh climate, the semi-desert is home to a variety of hardy animals adapted to the cold and arid conditions. Native species include the Goitered gazelle, the endangered wild Bactrian camel, and various desert reptiles. The saxaul forests also provide critical habitats for local bird species.
