Kalevipoeg

The epic was compiled and written by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, who is considered one of the most important figures in Estonian literature. He published the complete version of the text in 1861, playing a crucial role in the Estonian national awakening. Kreutzwald gathered the material from local folklore and oral traditions.

The epic follows the adventures of Kalevipoeg, the giant son of Kalev and Linda, as he travels to the ends of the earth and battles various mythological foes. His journey is ultimately a tragic one, ending when his legs are severed by a magic sword and he is confined to the gates of hell. The narrative heavily emphasizes themes of heroism and fate.

Kreutzwald modeled the structure of the Kalevipoeg heavily on the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, utilizing the same traditional trochaic tetrameter meter. He pieced the narrative together using various local Estonian folklore, myths, and legends that were facing extinction under heavy Baltic German influence. Because the oral tradition was fragmentary, he had to compose a significant portion of the bridging narrative himself.

The Estonian epic consists of exactly twenty cantos, containing over nineteen thousand lines of verse. This massive volume of poetry details the hero's life from his parents' courtship to his eventual demise. Each canto represents a distinct episode in the hero's overarching journey.
