Kartini

Raden Adjeng Kartini was a prominent Javanese noblewoman and a pioneering advocate for women's education and rights in Indonesia. Born into an aristocratic family in 1879, she fiercely protested the strict gender inequalities and lack of educational opportunities for Javanese women. Today, she is celebrated as a national hero in Indonesia.

"Door Duisternis tot Licht" (Through Darkness to Light) is a collection of Kartini's letters published posthumously in 1911. The letters detail her profound thoughts on Javanese culture, the oppression of women, and her desperate desire for education. The book was compiled by J.H. Abendanon and brought international attention to her progressive ideas.

Kartini is celebrated every year on April 21st, known as Kartini Day, a national holiday in Indonesia. On this day, Indonesian women and girls often wear traditional regional attire to schools and workplaces to honor her legacy. The holiday celebrates her massive contributions to female emancipation and the establishment of schools for girls.

Despite her strong desire to study in Europe to further her education, Kartini's dream was repeatedly blocked by cultural norms and colonial bureaucracy. Instead of allowing her to go abroad, her father eventually forced her into a traditional polygamous marriage in 1903. Tragically, she passed away just days after giving birth to her first child in 1904 at the age of 25.
