Kasahara's Butterfly

The model is associated with Japanese origami author Kunihiko Kasahara. He published numerous instructional books that helped introduce decorative, geometric, and puzzle-like origami to an international audience.

The classic model is intended to be folded from paper using origami techniques rather than assembled as a cut-paper craft. Instructions can vary between publications, so folders should follow the requirements given in the particular Kasahara diagram.

A crisp square of ordinary origami paper is suitable for most versions of the design. Two-colored paper can make the butterfly's symmetry and wing structure easier to see.

It is more approachable than many highly complex insect models, but accurate symmetry remains important. Folders comfortable with valley folds, mountain folds, and careful alignment should be able to follow a clearly diagrammed version.
