Kedi

Kedi profiles seven distinct stray cats, each given a name and personality by the film: Sari, Duman, Bengü, Aslan Parçasi, Gamsiz, Psikopat, and Deniz. Each cat's story is interwoven with the lives of Istanbul residents who feed and care for them. Director Ceyda Torun spent months filming the cats across different neighborhoods of Istanbul.

Kedi was initially distributed in the US through YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium) and also received a theatrical release via Oscilloscope Laboratories. It has since been available on various streaming platforms, with availability changing over time. The film earned over $4 million at the US box office, making it one of the most successful cat documentaries ever released.

Ceyda Torun directed Kedi, drawing from her own childhood growing up in Istanbul where she was surrounded by the city's street cats. She returned to Istanbul after years abroad to document the unique relationship between the city's residents and its estimated hundreds of thousands of stray cats. The film premiered in 2016.

Kedi is in Turkish with English subtitles, featuring interviews with the various Istanbul residents who care for the street cats. There is no traditional narrator; instead, the cat caretakers provide commentary in their own words. The documentary runs approximately 79 minutes and is suitable for all ages.
