Kirkpatrick Macmillan

description Kirkpatrick Macmillan Overview

Kirkpatrick Macmillan (1812-1878) was a Scottish blacksmith traditionally credited with constructing an early mechanically propelled two-wheeled cycle around 1839. The attributed design used treadles and connecting rods to drive the rear wheel, allowing movement without the rider pushing against the ground. Historians dispute the strength of the surviving evidence, so his status as the inventor of the pedal bicycle remains contested.
