Kohima War Cemetery

Kohima War Cemetery commemorates the Allied soldiers who died during the Battle of Kohima in 1944, a critical engagement between British-Indian forces and the Japanese army. The battle halted the Japanese advance into India and is sometimes called the 'Stalingrad of the East.' The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The cemetery features the renowned Kohima Epitaph, which reads: 'When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.' The inscription is carved into the memorial and is one of the most famous war commemorations in the world. The words were originally composed by John Maxwell Edmonds for a First World War context.

The cemetery is situated in the town of Kohima, the capital of Nagaland state in northeastern India. It was built on the actual battlefield terrain where the fighting took place, including the area around the Deputy Commissioner's bungalow and tennis court. The steep slopes of the original battlefield are reflected in the terraced layout of the graves.

The cemetery contains the graves of over 1,400 Commonwealth soldiers, primarily British and Indian troops who fought in the 1944 battle. Many of the burials are unidentified due to the intensity of the fighting. The memorial also lists soldiers who have no known grave and who fell during the broader Burma Campaign in the region.
