Kokoro

"Kokoro" was written by Natsume Soseki, who is widely considered one of Japan's greatest modern novelists, in the year 1914. The novel was originally published serially in the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. It remains his most famous and widely translated work.

The novel explores the complex relationship between a young university student, who acts as the narrator, and an older, reclusive mentor he calls "Sensei." As the story progresses, the focus shifts to Sensei's past, revealing a dark secret of betrayal and guilt from his university days. The narrative is set against the backdrop of Japan's Meiji Era.

The title "Kokoro" translates to "heart" or "spirit" in Japanese, and can also imply emotions, thoughts, or the inner essence of a person.
