Konopiště Castle is a castle located near the town of Benešov in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, approximately 40 km southeast of Prague. It was originally constructed in the Gothic style in the late 13th century following a French castle model, then rebuilt with fortifications in the 15th century. In 1887, the castle was purchased by Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, who undertook extensive renovations and used it as his primary residence. Franz Ferdinand lived there until his assassination in Sarajevo in 1914, the event that triggered World War I.
The castle is now a museum open to the public.
