Krubera-Voronya Cave

Krubera-Voronya Cave is notable for being one of the deepest known caves globally, reaching approximately 2,212 meters below its entrance. It held the record as the deepest known cave on Earth for terrestrial explorers for many years. A major exploration milestone occurred in 2004 when a descent pushed beyond the 2,000-meter mark.

Krubera-Voronya Cave is a complex karst system located in the Arabika Massif of the Gagra Range, within the region of Abkhazia, Georgia. The cave's entrance sits high in the mountains, carved out by the dissolving of ancient limestone. Its geographic location requires extensive logistical planning and political navigation for explorers to reach.

Krubera-Voronya Cave was initially discovered by Georgian explorers in the 1960s, though its true depth wasn't realized until decades later. It was the Cavex team and the Ukrainian Speleological Association that achieved the record-breaking descents in the early 2000s. These modern expeditions required weeks of underground camping to reach the bottom.

The conditions inside Krubera-Voronya Cave are incredibly harsh, featuring freezing temperatures, flooded tunnels (sumps), and near-total darkness. Explorers face extremely tight vertical shafts that require advanced rope techniques to navigate. The physical toll of descending over 2,000 meters means expeditions can take up to a month to complete safely.
