Kville Petroglyphs

Ships were a dominant motif in Scandinavian Bronze Age rock art and may represent travel, status, warfare, ceremony, or mythic journeys. Kville's carvings place them alongside people, animals, weapons, and cup marks rather than depicting isolated nautical scenes.

Many Bohuslän carving surfaces stood much closer to Bronze Age shorelines than they do today. Postglacial land uplift changed the landscape, so present-day inland rocks can preserve imagery originally created near navigable water.

Carvers pecked and ground images into exposed stone, producing shallow outlines and filled shapes. Low sunlight or angled artificial light often reveals these weathered grooves more clearly than flat midday illumination.

Both are in Bohuslän and share the region's Bronze Age vocabulary of ships, people, animals, and weapons. Tanum is the UNESCO-listed concentration, while Kville is a distinct locality within the broader rock-art landscape of northern Bohuslän.
