Kyrenia Castle

Kyrenia Castle houses the Kyrenia Ship, a 4th-century BC Hellenistic merchant vessel discovered in 1965 by marine archaeologist Andreas Cariolou off the coast of Cyprus. It is one of the best-preserved ancient shipwrecks ever recovered and includes its original cargo of amphorae and millstones.

The original Byzantine fortress was constructed in the 7th century to protect against Arab naval raids. It was substantially expanded by the Lusignan kings of Cyprus during the 12th–15th centuries, and further modified by the Venetians who added the thick artillery walls visible today.

Kyrenia Castle is located at the northern end of the old harbor of Kyrenia (Girne) in northern Cyprus. The harbor and castle together form one of the most photographed and visited historical sites on the island.
