La ingeniosa Elena

La ingeniosa Elena is Salas Barbadillo's revised version of La hija de Celestina. The revised work was printed in Madrid by 1614 and added verse and tales to the earlier narrative.

The work was written by Alonso Jerónimo de Salas Barbadillo, a Spanish author associated with the picaresque tradition. Its relationship to La hija de Celestina makes it important for studying rewritings of early modern rogue fiction.

It is not simply a completely unrelated novel: it revises and expands the earlier La hija de Celestina. The added verse and tales change the shape of the original material.

It centers on a clever, socially mobile female protagonist and uses satire to expose vice, deception, and unstable social status. Those concerns connect it with the broader Spanish picaresque tradition.
