The revue's arrival in Paris coincided with the height of the Jazz Age and the French fascination with African American culture. Josephine Baker was the breakout star of La Revue Nègre, which introduced her to European audiences and launched her extraordinary career in France. Her performance of the 'danse sauvage' wearing her iconic banana skirt became one of the most talked-about theatrical moments in 1920s Paris. Baker went on to become one of the highest-paid performers in Europe and a French Resistance hero during World War II.

Baker's 'danse sauvage' was controversial for its overt sensuality, near-nudity with the banana skirt costume, and the way it played on racial exoticism for a predominantly white Parisian audience.
