LaCie Rugged USB 3.0

The LaCie Rugged series offers varying levels of protection depending on the specific model, but the classic orange-bumper Rugged drives are typically rated for drop resistance of up to 1.2 meters and pressure resistance of a 1-ton car, not full waterproofing. Some newer Thunderbolt versions of the Rugged line add IP54 dust and water splash resistance, but the standard USB 3.0 model is primarily impact-resistant rather than waterproof.

The LaCie Rugged's iconic design, featuring a silver aluminum enclosure wrapped in a thick orange rubber bumper, was created by industrial designer Neil Poulton. Poulton has designed numerous products for LaCie since the 1990s, and the Rugged remains one of the most recognizable portable hard drive designs in the industry.

LaCie was acquired by Seagate Technology in 2012 for approximately $186 million, and LaCie has operated as a Seagate subsidiary since then. The Rugged drives typically contain Seagate-manufactured 2.5-inch hard drive mechanisms inside the protective enclosure.

The LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 supports the USB 3.0 (USB 3.2 Gen 1) interface, which has a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 5 Gbps. In real-world usage, transfer speeds depend on the internal drive mechanism, typically reaching around 120–130 MB/s with a 5400 RPM spinning hard drive, which is the standard mechanism used in most Rugged USB 3.0 configurations.
