Lake Nokoué is a shallow, brackish coastal lagoon located in the southern part of Benin, adjacent to the city of Cotonou. It is separated from the Gulf of Guinea by a narrow coastal strip and serves as a critical ecological and economic feature of the region. The lagoon is internationally recognized as a UNESCO Ramsar wetland due to its vital role in supporting regional freshwater fisheries, which utilize unique brush-park aquaculture techniques. Additionally, it is well known for housing Ganvié, a large stilt village built over the water, often referred to as the "Venice of Africa."
