Lake Poopó

description Lake Poopó Overview

Lake Poopó was a shallow, saline lake on Bolivia’s Altiplano, a high plateau in the Andes. It formed part of an endorheic basin, meaning that its water had no outlet to the sea, and its level varied strongly with rainfall, evaporation, and inflow from surrounding rivers. The lake dried almost completely in 2015, with drought, higher evaporation, climate change, and water diversion identified as contributing pressures. Its condition has made it an example of the vulnerability of shallow inland lakes.
