Larry Knopp

Knopp helped make sexuality and sexual identity central subjects in geography by studying queer neighborhoods, public space, mobility, and politics. His 2007 article On the Relationship Between Queer and Feminist Geographies appeared in The Professional Geographer, volume 59. They produced Claiming Space: Seattle's Lesbian and Gay Historical Geography with the Northwest Lesbian and Gay History Museum Project. The 2004 map used historical documents, oral accounts, and locations across Seattle instead of treating Capitol Hill as the city's only queer space. The 2008 article by Knopp and Michael Brown describes an action-research project that used GIS to map historically significant queer sites in Seattle. Knopp has held faculty roles at the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Washington, where his work has focused on queer place-making. A 2022 AAG program lists him with the University of Washington Tacoma and a project on changing LGBTQ space in the United States.
