Leda Cosmides

Leda Cosmides is a pioneer who argued that the human mind consists of specialized, domain-specific information-processing mechanisms rather than a general-purpose computer. She proposes that these cognitive modules were shaped by natural selection to solve specific survival problems faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Her work extensively explores how these specialized circuits govern social behavior and reasoning.

She collaborates most extensively with her husband, John Tooby, who is also a prominent evolutionary psychologist. Together, they co-founded the Center for Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Their joint publications have essentially defined the theoretical framework and methodology of the modern evolutionary psychology discipline.

Cosmides famously adapted the Wason Selection Task, a logic puzzle that humans usually fail in abstract formats, to test for "cheater detection." She demonstrated that people solve the logical puzzle easily when it is framed as a social contract involving someone breaking a rule to gain a benefit. This finding provided strong evidence for her theory that the brain has an evolved, specialized module for detecting social cheaters.

Leda Cosmides is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). At UCSB, she and John Tooby established the Center for Evolutionary Psychology, which serves as a major research hub for the field. Her academic career has been deeply rooted at UCSB, where she has produced the bulk of her foundational research.
