Leonese Wrestling

description Leonese Wrestling Overview

Leonese wrestling, or lucha leonesa and aluche, is a traditional belt-wrestling style from León Province and nearby culturally related areas in Spain. Competitors face each other inside a circular area called a corro and hold the opponent's belt while trying to throw them to the ground. A written rule set was produced in 1933 to standardize the grip, clothing, falls, and other practices that had previously been passed on orally. Castile and León recognized the tradition as an Intangible Asset of Cultural Interest in 2017.
