Les Indes galantes

Rameau designed the work as an opera-ballet with a prologue followed by four self-contained entrées. The stories move among settings including the Ottoman Empire, Peru, Persia, and French-controlled North America, while repeatedly examining love across political or cultural boundaries.

In the final entrée, the Native American heroine Zima rejects the Spaniard Don Alvar and the Frenchman Damon in favor of Adario. The concluding dance develops music Rameau had previously published as the keyboard piece Les Sauvages.

Its 1735 Paris premiere initially received a mixed response, and Rameau revised and expanded the work during subsequent performances. It ultimately became one of his most successful stage works at the Académie Royale de Musique.

The opera reflects an 18th-century French fantasy of distant cultures rather than an accurate portrayal of Persia or the Americas. Productions such as Clément Cogitore's staging for the Paris Opera have confronted that legacy by using contemporary performers and dance styles.
