Let Joy Reign Supreme

The film portrays the Pontcallec Conspiracy, a real political uprising by Breton nobles against the Duke of Orléans during the French Régence period in the early 18th century. The conspiracy ended with the execution of the Marquis de Pontcallec in 1720. Bertrand Tavernier directed the film as a satirical allegory for modern French politics.

Philippe Noiret leads the cast as Philippe d'Orléans, the Regent of France, alongside Jean Rochefort and Jean-Pierre Marielle in major supporting roles. Noiret was a staple of French cinema known for his work in Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino. The ensemble cast is filled with prominent French character actors of the 1970s.

The original French title translates literally to 'Let the Party Begin' or 'Let the Celebration Begin,' which carries heavy ironic weight given the political executions and corruption depicted in the film. The English title 'Let Joy Reign Supreme' is a more poetic rendering of the same ironic sentiment. Both titles reference the decadent atmosphere of the Régence era.
