Li Qingzhao

Li Qingzhao, born in 1084, is regarded as one of the greatest writers of ci lyric poetry. Her work is admired for emotional precision, musical form, and intimate handling of memory, separation, and loss.

Li Qingzhao lived through the fall of the Northern Song and the flight south after the Jurchen invasions. Her later poems often carry the weight of displacement, widowhood, lost collections, and political collapse.

Li Qingzhao married Zhao Mingcheng, a scholar and collector of inscriptions and antiquities. Their shared collecting life became part of the background to her later grief after his death.

Ci is a lyric form written to fixed tune patterns, with line lengths shaped by the song model. Li Qingzhao mastered this form in the Song dynasty and used it for subtle shifts of voice, weather, longing, and memory.
