Liberty Tunnel

description Liberty Tunnel Overview

The Liberty Tunnels are a pair of twin-bore vehicular tunnels located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that pass through Mount Washington. Opened in 1924, the tunnels measure over a mile in length and were among the longest automobile tunnels in the United States upon their completion. They carry Route 51 and serve as a critical transportation link between downtown Pittsburgh and the southern suburbs. The construction of the tunnels also necessitated the creation of a separate ventilation system to manage vehicle exhaust.
