description Libuše Overview

Libuse is a three-act Czech opera by Bedrich Smetana, with a libretto by Josef Wenzig translated into Czech by Ervin Spindler. Based on the legendary princess and prophetess Libuse, it depicts disputes over justice, her marriage to Premysl, and a concluding vision of the Czech nation's future. Conceived as a ceremonial work, it received its premiere in 1881 at the opening of Prague's National Theatre.
