Linotype Univers

Linotype Univers is a digital sans-serif typeface released in 1997. It is an expansion of Adrian Frutiger's original Univers family, which was first introduced in 1957. The 1997 release added several new weights while strictly adhering to Frutiger's original design grid.

Linotype Univers was designed by Adrian Frutiger in collaboration with Linotype's type director, Akira Kobayashi. Released in 1997, the project expanded Frutiger's classic 1957 Univers family. Together, they added new weights and optimized the letterforms for digital screens.

Released in 1997, Linotype Univers expanded the original 1957 family to include 63 different weights. Frutiger and Kobayashi carefully adjusted the curves and terminals to improve legibility on digital displays. Despite the updates, it remained true to the original design grid.

Linotype Univers was created in 1997 to modernize Adrian Frutiger's 1957 classic for digital typography. The original Univers was designed for hot metal typesetting, which caused inconsistencies in early digital scans.
