Llanos de Mojos

description Llanos de Mojos Overview

Llanos de Mojos is a seasonally flooded savanna ecosystem located primarily in the Beni department of northern Bolivia. Covering approximately 110,000 square kilometers, it consists of grasslands, wetlands, and forest islands that experience dramatic seasonal flooding during the rainy season. The region is notable for extensive pre-Columbian earthworks, including raised agricultural fields, causeways, canals, and settlement mounds built by indigenous peoples between approximately 500 BCE and 1500 CE. These earthworks demonstrate sophisticated adaptations to the region's challenging hydrological conditions and represent one of the largest pre-Columbian agricultural systems in Amazonia.
