Loch Ness is a large, deep freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands, extending approximately 37 kilometers southwest of Inverness. It holds the largest volume of fresh water in Scotland, reaching a maximum depth of about 230 meters. The lake is part of the Caledonian Canal system and features notable landmarks along its shores, such as the ruins of Urquhart Castle. It is internationally recognized for alleged sightings of a large aquatic creature, commonly known as the Loch Ness Monster, first reported in the 1930s.
