Lodewijk Woltjer

Lodewijk Woltjer was a prominent Dutch astronomer renowned for his pioneering work in applying plasma physics to astronomical observations. He made significant theoretical contributions to understanding the magnetic fields of galaxies and stars. His research heavily influenced modern astrophysics.

Woltjer is highly respected for his tenure as the Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), serving from 1975 to 1987. During this time, he significantly expanded the organization's research capabilities and global reputation. He later went on to lead the Space Telescope Science Institute.

Woltjer was a pioneer in the field of plasma physics, specifically focusing on how super-dense matter behaves in space. He famously worked on theories regarding neutron stars and cosmic magnetic fields. His work in this area helped bridge the gap between theoretical physics and actual astronomical observation.

During his 12-year directorship at ESO starting in 1975, Woltjer oversaw the development of major observatory projects in Chile.
