Lop Desert

description Lop Desert Overview

The Lop Desert is a large, hyperarid salt and sand desert located in the southeastern part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China. It surrounds the historical lake basin of Lop Nur, which has largely dried up, leaving extensive salt crusts. Historically, the region served as a challenging waypoint along the ancient Silk Road. In the 20th century, the area became known as the site of China's nuclear weapons testing program, which included the country's first atomic bomb test in 1964.

help Lop Desert FAQ

Where is the Lop Desert located?

The Lop Desert lies in the Lop Nur basin in the eastern Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, China. It is a hyperarid region of salt crusts, sand, sparse vegetation, and former lake beds. [Geographical Research](https://www.dlyj.ac.cn/EN/10.11821/yj1983020010)

Why is Lop Desert connected with the Silk Road?

The Lop Nur basin once supported oasis settlements such as Loulan and stood near important Silk Road routes across Central Asia. Archaeological and historical sources describe Loulan as an oasis kingdom around the eastern Tarim Basin. Why is Lop Nur mentioned in nuclear-test history?

The Lop Nur region became China's main nuclear testing area because it was remote and sparsely inhabited. A U.S. Geological Survey study documents 16 underground tests in the area between 1969 and 1992. Was Lop Nur always a dry desert?

No. Lop Nur was formerly a large hyperhaline lake, but it later became a salt-crust-covered playa as water supplies and regional conditions changed. The surrounding Lop Desert now contains extensive dried lake and salt-basin surfaces.
