Louis Kossuth

Kossuth was the leading figure of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, which sought independence from the Austrian Empire. He served as governor-president of the short-lived Hungarian republic after the revolutionary government declared independence from the Habsburg monarchy.

After the revolution was crushed by Austrian and Russian forces, Kossuth went into exile and never returned to Hungary. He lived in Turkey, Italy, and briefly in the United States, where he conducted a celebrated speaking tour in 1851–1852 to rally support for Hungarian independence.
