Luis Barragán

Casa Barragan, built in 1948, is both a house and a concentrated statement of Luis Barragan's architecture. It uses walls, color, light, water, and quiet courtyards rather than decorative excess.

Barragan received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1980 for a body of work that made modern architecture deeply emotional and place-specific. His houses and gardens are known for intense color and controlled light.

Barragan is strongly associated with saturated pink, yellow, red, and purple walls, often set against shadow and water. Those colors appear in projects such as Casa Gilardi in Mexico City.

Barragan used modern geometric forms, but he rejected a purely glass-and-steel look. His 1948 Casa Barragan combines modern abstraction with Mexican materials, gardens, religious feeling, and privacy.
