Luna 3

description Luna 3 Overview

Luna 3 was a Soviet space mission launched in 1959. It achieved a unique flyby trajectory around the Moon, capturing the first images of the far side. This mission provided invaluable data and visual information about this previously unseen lunar hemisphere. Scientists and historians studying early space exploration and lunar geology benefit from its historical significance and photographic record.

insights Why this score

Luna 3 ranks #49 of 212 in the Space Mission ranking, behind LCROSS, ahead of Pioneer 11.

help Luna 3 FAQ

How did Luna 3 photograph the Moon's far side without digital cameras?

Luna 3 used photographic film, developed it automatically aboard the spacecraft and scanned the processed images for radio transmission to Earth. The resulting pictures were noisy but revealed terrain never previously seen.

Why can we never see the Moon's far side from Earth?

The Moon is tidally locked, so it rotates once during each orbit and keeps nearly the same hemisphere facing Earth. Libration exposes a little more than half of the lunar surface over time, but Luna 3 was needed to view the hidden region directly.

What major feature did Luna 3 reveal?

Its 1959 images showed that the far side has far fewer dark basaltic maria than the near side. Features identified from the photographs included Mare Moscoviense and the large area later named Mare Desiderii.

Did Luna 3 orbit or land on the Moon?

Neither. The Soviet probe followed a looping flyby trajectory around the Moon and then returned toward Earth, where contact was eventually lost.
