LuxRender

description LuxRender Overview

LuxRender is a powerful, open source 3D rendering software utilizing physically based raytracing techniques. It excels at creating realistic images from complex scenes featuring detailed materials and lighting. Its adaptive algorithms provide efficient rendering, making it suitable for independent artists, designers, and studios prioritizing high-quality visuals without extensive computational resources.

help LuxRender FAQ

Is LuxRender still being developed under that name?

The original LuxRender project was rebooted as LuxCoreRender, with the new name and version 2 architecture introduced around 2017 and 2018. Anyone starting a current workflow should look for LuxCoreRender and its active integrations rather than old LuxRender 1.x downloads.

Can LuxRender create models, or does it only render them?

LuxRender is a physically based renderer, not a modeling package. Scenes are normally built in software such as Blender and sent to the renderer through an exporter such as BlendLuxCore.

How does LuxCoreRender differ from Blender Cycles?

Both are physically based renderers, but LuxCoreRender offers its own light-transport engines and material system through the BlendLuxCore plugin. Cycles is integrated directly into Blender, so it generally has fewer setup and compatibility hurdles.

Can old LuxRender scenes be opened directly in modern LuxCoreRender?

Not reliably, because LuxCoreRender 2.0 dropped old LuxRender 1.x code and introduced a substantially revised API and toolchain. Complex legacy scenes may require material, lighting, and exporter adjustments before they reproduce the original result.
