Ma Ying-jeou is a Taiwanese lawyer and politician who served as president of the Republic of China, commonly called Taiwan, from 2008 to 2016. A member of the Kuomintang, he pursued closer cross-strait relations, including expanded economic and civic exchanges with mainland China. In November 2015, he met Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping in Singapore, the first meeting at that level between leaders from the two sides since 1949.
