Macuteo Obelisk

description Macuteo Obelisk Overview

The Macuteo Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian granite obelisk that now stands in the Piazza della Rotonda in Rome, directly in front of the Pantheon. The obelisk originally stood in the Iseum Campense, the ancient Temple of Isis complex in Rome, after being brought from Egypt during the Roman Imperial period. It was moved to its current location in 1711 by Pope Clement XI, who placed it atop an existing fountain designed by Giacomo della Porta. The obelisk bears hieroglyphic inscriptions from the reign of Ramesses II.
