The levada walks are a vast network of hiking trails that follow narrow, centuries-old irrigation channels carved into the sides of Madeira's dramatic mountains. These trails were originally built to distribute water from the rainy, lush laurel forests of the mountainous interior to the drier agricultural coastal regions. Today, they offer hikers some of the most spectacular and accessible trekking in Europe, often cutting directly through dense, misty cloud forests.

Funchal, the vibrant capital city of this volcanic island, is widely considered the best base for tourists due to its abundance of hotels, restaurants, and historic landmarks. Staying in Funchal gives you immediate access to the famous Mercado dos Lavradores and the cable car that takes you up to the mountain village of Monte. While coastal towns like Caniço offer quieter resorts, Funchal provides the necessary infrastructure for renting a car or booking a levada tour.

While Funchal itself is highly walkable and features decent local buses, renting a car is highly recommended if you want to fully explore Madeira's rugged mountain peaks and dramatic coastline. The island's steep terrain means public transit cannot reach many of the remote trailheads, like the famous Pico do Arieiro sunrise viewpoint. Alternatively, many tourists opt to book guided Jeep tours to safely navigate the steep, winding roads and narrow tunnels.

Madeira is a year-round outdoor playground thanks to its subtropical climate, but the best time for hiking is during the spring or early autumn. During these months, the weather is warm, the skies are clearer, and the island's famous laurel forests are incredibly lush. Summer can be quite humid and busy with tourists, while winter brings heavy rains that can make the narrow levada trails incredibly slippery.
