Mancala

description Mancala Overview

Mancala is a broad family of two-player strategy games rather than a single standardized game. Players distribute counters, commonly seeds, stones, or shells, among rows of pits according to rules that vary by regional form, with the usual objective involving the capture or accumulation of pieces. Well-known variants include Oware, Bao, and Kalah, and the games are historically associated with communities across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

insights Ranking position

Mancala ranks #2 of 85 in the Number Game ranking, behind 15 Puzzle, ahead of Cribbage.

help Mancala FAQ

Is Mancala one game or a family of games?

Mancala is a family of sowing games played by distributing counters among pits. Kalah, Oware, Bao, and Congkak are distinct games within that family and do not share one universal ruleset.

How does capturing work in Kalah?

In the common Kalah rules, a player captures when the final stone lands in an empty pit on that player's side and the opposite pit contains stones. The landing stone and the opposite stones are moved into that player's store.

How is Oware different from the Mancala set sold as Kalah?

Oware normally uses 12 main pits and no permanent scoring stores at the ends of the board. Captures occur on the opponent's side when a move leaves a pit with two or three seeds, subject to rules that prevent starving the opponent.

Can Mancala end before every pit is empty?

Yes, but the ending condition depends on the variant. In Kalah, play usually stops when one player's six pits are empty, while Oware has separate rules for situations in which a player cannot be fed another seed.
