description Mangal Pandey Overview

Mangal Pandey was a sepoy, or Indian soldier, serving in the Bengal Army of the British East India Company. In March 1857 at Barrackpore, he attacked British officers, an episode that became an early and widely remembered flashpoint of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. His name is associated with resistance to Company rule and with later Indian accounts of the rebellion that challenged British authority in the subcontinent.
