Marco Polo

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant and explorer whose travels to Asia, documented in 'The Travels of Marco Polo', introduced Europeans to the culture and inner workings of the Mongol Empire and China. His accounts provided the first comprehensive look at the East, describing paper money, coal, and the complex bureaucracy of the Yuan Dynasty. While some historians debate the extent of his travels, his influence on European cartography and the subsequent Age of Discovery is undeniable, as his writings inspired many later explorers, including Christopher Columbus, to seek routes to the East.
