Marshmallow Sofa

The iconic Marshmallow Sofa was originally designed by Irving Harper for the George Nelson design office in 1956. It is widely considered a landmark of mid-century modern furniture design due to its playful and unconventional use of materials.

The sofa is instantly recognizable by its brightly colored, oversized circular cushions arranged in a grid. It features a low-profile steel frame that gives it a distinctly modern, floating appearance.

The sofa typically consists of 18 individual 'marshmallow' cushions made of foam and upholstered in durable materials like vinyl, leather, or polyester. These cushions are attached directly to a painted steel frame, eliminating the need for a traditional heavy upholstery base.

While its primary appeal lies in its novelty and visual pop-art design, the generously padded cushions do provide a surprisingly comfortable seating option. However, the individual separated cushions make it more of an accent piece than a sofa meant for lounging for long periods.
