Mary Cassatt

Yes. Cassatt was an American artist who worked mainly in France and exhibited with the Impressionists after Edgar Degas encouraged her to join them. Her first Impressionist group exhibition was in 1879.

Start with Little Girl in a Blue Armchair from 1878 and The Child's Bath from 1893. Both show Cassatt's interest in modern domestic life, unusual viewpoints, and the psychological presence of women and children.

Cassatt returned often to scenes of women caring for children because those subjects let her paint intimate modern life from a woman's point of view. The Child's Bath, now at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a famous example because its overhead angle echoes Japanese prints rather than academic portrait conventions.

She was American, born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania in 1844. Her mature career unfolded largely in Paris, where she worked near Degas, Berthe Morisot, and other artists connected to Impressionism.
