Masaya Volcano Mudpots

These geothermal mudpots are located inside the massive basaltic caldera of the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua. The area is officially protected as the country's first and largest national park, Parque Nacional Volcán Masaya.

Yes, unlike many steep volcanoes, a paved road allows visitors to drive their vehicles directly up to the rim of the Santiago crater. From the parking area, you can easily walk to viewing platforms overlooking the steaming fissures and mudpots.

When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the constant gas emissions and roaring lava led them to call it "La Boca del Infierno" (The Mouth of Hell). The conquistadors actively attempted to exorcise the volcano's demons by planting a large cross at the summit.
