description Matter Overview

Matter is not a physical radio protocol itself, but rather an application layer standard designed to ensure seamless interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. It acts as the unifying software layer, allowing a device using Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet to communicate using a single, unified set of rules. Its primary strength is eliminating ecosystem lock-in, making it the most future-proof choice for complex, multi-vendor smart homes.

help Matter FAQ

Does Matter replace Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave?

Matter is an IP-based application standard, not a replacement radio. Matter devices currently communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread, while Bluetooth Low Energy is commonly used during setup.

Do Thread-based Matter devices require a border router?

Yes, a Matter device using Thread needs a Thread border router to connect its mesh network to the home's wider IP network. Products such as certain Apple TV 4K, HomePod, Nest Hub, and eero models can provide that function.

Can one Matter device appear in Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa?

Matter's multi-admin feature is designed to let the same device be shared among multiple compatible ecosystems. Each ecosystem still needs an appropriate Matter controller, and some manufacturer-specific features may remain confined to the maker's app.

Will Matter make an existing Zigbee device compatible automatically?

No, an ordinary Zigbee device does not become a native Matter device through a software label or new app. A manufacturer can expose supported Zigbee products through a Matter bridge, as Philips Hue does with its Hue Bridge.
