Max Linder was the stage name of Gabriel Leuvielle (1883-1925), a French stage and film performer who became one of the first major comedy stars of cinema. His recurring character "Max," a dapper, resourceful gentleman, appeared in numerous short films he wrote, directed, and starred in for Pathé Frères starting in the 1900s. Charlie Chaplin publicly acknowledged Linder as a formative influence on his own screen work. Linder's career spanned France, the United States, and Austria before his death in Paris in 1925.
